Alternative Beliefs

I believe that if a person's faith can easily be changed, then that faith is not as strong as it should be, and no number theories presenting alternatives to that faith should capable of disrupting a person's faith if indeed that faith is well inculcated in the person's values and beliefs as it should be.

In that case, why do people ban the teaching of Darwinism in Schools, up to the point that certain textbooks are banned upon the mention of Darwin's little theory? Some organisations even employ the use of warning stickers saying:

"This textbook contains material on evolution. Evolution is a theory not a fact regarding the origin of living things. This material should be approached with an open mind, studied carefully and critically considered."

I think that all text, should be approached "with an open mind, studied carefully and critically considered" no matter the scenario. I also think that just about any individual human being is an intelligent and capable creature and hence posses the aptitude to decide for themselves what they want to believe in.

It is indeed a wonderment that humans are posses the ability of practicing informed choice, where they can actively see two sides of a situation and decide which side they should or should not support, or even whether they should support a side at all. If we started trying to see both sides of a story, we would then be much more well informed body of people who are not ignorant to any side of a given argument, who understand both sides, and hence are capable of living more harmoniously with people who have believes incongruent with our own.

If religious organisations can indeed promote books regarding genesis, I think that schools or scientific organisations can also preach Darwinism to level the playing field a little.

This reminds me of the recent controversy which surrounded Dan Brown's books and the religious uproar against the movies. Churches, my parish included, discouraged the reading of The Da Vinci Code and other Dan Brown books for fear that the congregation may be swayed to doubt the credibility of the religion.

Religion is indeed a sensitive topic and I do believe that the existence of religion is indeed a good thing. It keeps the majority of the population in line and of course it helps teach moral values and inculcate socially acceptable behaviour.
